The first wedding of the season always feels a little special. For different people, it’s special for different reasons, and Andrea and Derek’s ICA Boston wedding was particularly meaningful for me in a few ways.
First, Andrea is the sister of my former bride, Jen, so I was already familiar with the family. That’s a huge plus when you’re photographing a wedding. Knowing all the main players ahead of time definitely helps! Beyond that, it’s such an honor to be invited back to document another milestone for a family you’ve worked with before. And by “such an honor,” I mean I was truly honored. (And genuinely thrilled that my work resonated with them. Must be at least partially due to my charming personality, too. ๐)
Second, I always get excited when I have the opportunity to photograph at a new venue, especially one as unique and unconventional as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. From the amphitheater-style ceremony space to an actual theater for dinner, the ICA is one of the coolest wedding venues I’ve had the chance to experience. And because it’s located right in the Seaport District, the scenery outside is every bit as impressive as what’s inside.
And you guys remember May, right? Not exactly New England’s finest hour. But a little drizzle wasn’t about to stop a calm, easygoing couple like Andrea and Derek from enjoying every moment of their day. And Boston? It always delivers. As a backdrop for photos, it’s hard to beat. The skyline is instantly recognizable and endlessly photogenic. If only getting around the city were as enjoyable as staying in it, Boston would score a perfect 10. (Of course, if I’m complaining about Boston traffic, I should probably be thankful I don’t live in LA, where “light traffic” means something entirely different. ๐ )
Andrea and Derek’s wedding day was filled with joy, laughter, emotion, and plenty of fun. From an almost comical dress-buttoning mishap to a heartfelt and inspiring ceremony, from funny and touching toasts to a packed dance floor full of energy, every part of the day felt memorable. Andrea and Derek are two of the kindest, most impressive people, and I have no doubt their relationship will continue to flourish as they begin this next chapter together as husband and wife.
As beautiful as the ICA was and as iconic as the Boston backdrop may be, what I’ll remember most about this wedding is the people. From seeing familiar faces again to watching Andrea and Derek celebrate with the people who love them most, the day was filled with so much warmth and joy. It was an honor to be a small part of it all, and there was no better way to begin another wedding season.
