Engagement sessions are such a great way to get to know a couple, especially when it’s the first time you’re meeting them as their photographer. While that wasn’t exactly the case with me and Jeriann, this Goddard Park engagement session was still a wonderful opportunity to spend time together and ease into the experience. Jeriann is the cousin of a dear friend of mine, but I must admit I didn’t know her all that well and had only met her a handful of times. Still, she is a truly lovely human, and I was honored when she asked me to photograph her wedding. As for her fiancé Nick — I met him for the very first time at their engagement session, and it turns out he’s a lovely human, too. Yay!
Let’s circle back to my original point about engagement sessions. I include them in my wedding packages because they’re such a helpful way to get a feel for a couple before the big day. You start to understand their dynamic through the way they interact — maybe they’re whimsical and sweet, sentimental and cuddly, or even a little awkward and giggly (which, believe it or not, can make for some of the most endearing and emotive photos). Either way, it’s a wonderful preview of how the wedding day will unfold and gives both the couple and the photographer a leg up when it comes to comfort, communication, and collaboration.
If I had to describe Jeriann and Nick, I’d say they were a bit shy and reserved at first — there was plenty of nervous laughter happening, haha. The beauty of an engagement session, though, is that it allows space to warm up and settle in without the pressure of a strict timeline. And once they did, these two really leaned into their playful and romantic sides. Goddard Park also gave us no shortage of beautiful backdrops, so we wandered through several areas, giving us lots of variety throughout the session. I also have to mention that Jeriann and Nick’s outfit choices paired perfectly with all of the lush greenery surrounding us — and since green happens to be my favorite color, I was more than happy to let it play a co-starring role in their photos.
Sessions like this are a reminder of why engagement photos matter so much. They create space to slow down, connect, and simply be yourselves — no timelines, no expectations, just the two of you getting comfortable in front of the camera. Jeriann and Nick’s Goddard Park engagement session was relaxed, genuine, and full of those small, in-between moments that quietly set the tone for what’s to come. It was such a joy to photograph this chapter for them, and I can’t wait to continue the story on their wedding day.

Planning an engagement session (or a wedding!) and want it to feel comfortable and fun? I’d love to connect!
