Early spring engagement sessions are kind of the unsung heroes of photography seasons. The air is crisp but hopeful, the crowds are minimal, and everything feels like it’s just about to wake up again. This Providence RI spring engagement session had all of that energy—and then some.
I met Maggie and Matt at the Providence River Pedestrian Bridge, which is always a favorite starting point for sessions downtown. With the city skyline behind us and the river quietly doing its thing, it was the perfect spot to ease into photos. From there, we did what Providence does best—we walked. We made our way through College Hill, wandering without a super strict plan and stopping whenever something caught our eye (or the light looked extra good). College Hill has this effortless charm—historic homes, quiet streets, and just enough character to make every turn feel like a photo opportunity. These stroll-and-stop moments are always where the magic sneaks in.
One of my favorite parts of this session (besides the gorgeous Providence backdrop) was getting to spend time with these two. They were incredibly sweet, friendly, and instantly easy to be around—the kind of couple that makes a photo session feel more like a walk with friends. They also mentioned that they had lived in Alaska for military service, which immediately fascinated me… mostly because I don’t know a single other person who’s ever lived there. Cue me asking approximately one hundred Alaska-related questions throughout the session. Between stories of life up north and lots of laughter in between photos, it felt like we were just bouncing between photographing the moment and me barraging Maggie and Matt with questions about Alaska!
As the session continued on, we headed up to Prospect Park for some truly epic views. Providence from this perspective delivers every time. The city stretched out behind them, golden hour light filtering through the trees, and as Maggie and Matt took it all in, they somehow became part of the view too.
To wrap things up, we wandered back toward the Providence River Pedestrian Bridge, just as the clouds rolled in and softened the sky. We skipped the colorful sunset and ended the session with clouds, cool tones, and a dreamy, moody vibe. It was proof that you don’t need perfect sunshine for beautiful photos—just a warm, genuinely kind couple, a picturesque city backdrop, and a little Providence magic.
Maggie and Matt’s coastal Bristol Harbor Inn wedding will be featured on the blog coming soon! STAY TUNED!
