Providence is such a great spot for an engagement session. Casey and Emily’s wedding next August will be at the Dunes Club in Narragansett, so they wanted to steer away from the beach vibe and choose something urban, charming, and walkable. Check, check. ✅ Their fall engagement session in Providence included scenes from the Providence River Pedestrian Bridge, the historic streets of College Hill, and a cute little hidden-gem park that I’m keeping in my back pocket for future use!
Casey is the nephew of my dear friend Amiee (❤️❤️❤️). I have to say, she has been instrumental in sending some great couples my way over the years – I’ve photographed at least four of her other nieces and nephews! And her wedding as well! … back in the day 😉 Aside from his connection to one of my closest friends, Casey is truly a sweet, genuine person… and Emily is too! (No surprise haha.) I suppose that’s why they make such a great pair.
We started our session on the Pedestrian Bridge, but quickly decided to head up to the College Hill area because I knew the light would be much softer and flattering back by the bridge later on. So we made a note to circle back toward the end. Spoiler alert: the sky WAS subdued and dreamy when we returned!
When my sessions involve wandering up and down streets as charming and historic as those in Providence, they tend to go something like this: let’s walk… oooh, can we stop here? The light is amazing. More walking. Pause again. I love how the sun is peeking through the trees. Walk a little farther. Stop again for more beautiful light. I’m basically a distracted golden retriever when it comes to good light – haha. But it keeps things fun and spontaneous, right? Thankfully, Casey and Emily were completely on board with all of my little detours, which made the whole session feel relaxed and enjoyable.
One of the things I love most about engagement sessions – and the reason they’re included in my collections – is that they give us a chance to connect before the big wedding day. Sometimes it’s the first time I meet a couple, sometimes not. In this case, Casey and I had met a few times before, but it was my first time meeting Emily (which was a pleasure ☺️).
It also gives couples a chance to do a bit of a “dry run” with portraits before the wedding, which helps everyone feel more comfortable and prepared. During this time, I get to observe how they interact and what their natural dynamic is – playful, romantic, sentimental, or somewhere in between. It gives me a little glimpse into their connection and how they fit together.
Casey and Emily are incredibly sweet together, both genuine and warm. I’m really looking forward to their wedding at The Dunes Club in Narragansett RI this summer!
