This Narragansett RI family portrait session was a perfect example of why Black Point Trail is quickly becoming one of my favorite locations for portraits. While it does feel a bit like you’re heading out on a wooded hike at first, the payoff at the end is immediate — and completely worth it. The terrain is rugged and a little challenging to navigate, but the sweeping views of Narragansett Bay are absolutely breathtaking. It was the ideal setting for the Nelson family, who arrived adventurous, game for anything, and ready to embrace the experience.
Jaime is a respected member of the wedding industry — and an incredibly talented planner (check her out at Eventfully Planned!) — so I was especially honored when she asked me to photograph her family. She also casually mentioned that they hadn’t had a formal portrait session in years. No pressure, right? Esteemed Rhode Island wedding planner and long overdue for updated family photos? Luckily for me, Jaime and her crew made my job easy. They took direction like pros and happily went along with every creative idea I threw their way (and yes, they politely humored all my whims — which I deeply appreciate 😄).
The day itself was a little breezy and softly hazy, which honestly only added to the mood. I’ve always loved when the weather brings its own personality to a session, and this one delivered. The light was even and gentle, giving us endless options throughout Black Point’s varied landscape. From the deep blue of the ocean to the textured rock formations along the shoreline, there was no shortage of stunning backdrops. Those rocks in particular are endlessly fascinating — they offer all the coastal charm you’d expect, paired with a bit of drama and the kind of natural beauty that doesn’t need much embellishment.
Spending the evening with the Nelson family at Black Point was such a joy, and a wonderful reminder of how meaningful it can be to step away from the everyday and document this season of life together. Between the dramatic shoreline, the soft coastal light, and their easygoing connection, this session felt timeless in all the best ways. These are the kinds of images that grow more valuable with time — a snapshot of family, place, and togetherness, exactly as it is right now.
